In September 2018 our chapter erected a memorial to honor Vietnam Veterans from
North Carolina who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

The memorial is located in the courtyard at the
Asheville V.A. Medical Center.

We are proud to have this memorial to honor North Carolina veterans that served in the Vietnam War, and “gave all”.

BLUE RIDGE HONOR FLIGHT

Blue Ridge Honor Flight returning to                                                     Asheville Regional Airport

Members of our chapter have participated in Blue Ridge Honor Flights traveling to Washington D.C. to tour veteran memorials.  Some of our members have also made this trip as guardians assisting other veterans making the trip for their first time.  This has proved to be a memorable experience for our veterans, and guardians (veteran and non-veteran). The day trip includes a “welcome home” for the veterans at the Asheville Regional Airport.  For many veterans, especially those that served in Vietnam this is the first homecoming they have experienced without negativity, but complete with community recognition and respect for their service.

“21 Years- A Folded Flag”

Richard A. Fitts, Jr.  &  Lt. Col. Ted Minnick, Ret. U.S. Army

On July 27, 2019 one of our members attended a showing of the documentary film “21 Years- A Folded Flag”, in Spring Creek NC.

Lt. Col. Harold “Ted” Minnick, (Ret.) U.S. Army was introduced to the film’s director Richard A. Fitts, Jr.  The two shared a special moment when it was acknowledged that Ted had worn a POW/MIA bracelet bearing the name of Rich’s dad SSGT Richard Fitts. SSGT Fitts was a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, 5th SFG (Green Beret) assigned to MACVSOG.  Ted had the bracelet for over 20 years, and as customary returned it to the family when SSGT Fitts remains were repatriated in 1989 after he was M.I.A. in Laos for 21 years.
